Common CNC Machining Materials
Material selection is one of the most critical decisions in any CNC machining project. The right choice balances mechanical requirements, machinability, cost, and availability.
Aluminum Alloys
6061-T6 (Most Popular)
The workhorse of CNC machining. Good strength-to-weight ratio, excellent machinability, anodizes well. Used in: structural components, housings, brackets, heat sinks.
7075-T6 (High Strength)
Nearly as strong as steel at one-third the weight. Harder to machine than 6061. Used in: aerospace components, high-stress parts, military applications.
Stainless Steels
304 (General Purpose)
Excellent corrosion resistance, widely available. Work-hardens during machining, requiring sharp tools and correct speeds. Used in: food equipment, medical devices, marine applications.
316 (Superior Corrosion Resistance)
Better chemical resistance than 304, especially against chlorides. More expensive but necessary for harsh environments.
Carbon Steels
1045 (Medium Carbon)
Good balance of strength and machinability. Can be heat-treated. Used in: shafts, gears, bolts, fixtures.
Titanium
Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5)
Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, biocompatible, corrosion resistant. Difficult to machine — requires specialized tooling, low speeds, and flood coolant. Used in: aerospace, medical implants, high-performance applications.
Engineering Plastics
PEEK
High temperature resistance, chemical inertness, excellent mechanical properties. Expensive but irreplaceable in certain applications.
Delrin (POM/Acetal)
Low friction, excellent dimensional stability, easy to machine. Used in: gears, bushings, food-handling equipment.
